Jungle Perch in pictures.

Jungle Perch lurk the fast water like a rainbow trout, hit off the surface like an Australian bass and fight like Tyson in a mood making them one of our top natives to chase on fly.

I first encountered these fish while on an extended saltwater trip across the wilds of Far north Queensland with guide Dave Bradley. We fished all sorts of water for barra, tuna and goldens and even had a few shots at Permit.

Knowing how much I like small trout water, Dave suggested a day chasing jungle perch near Cairns as a change of pace from the high pressure environment of flats boats and I couldn’t get my mitts on my 6 weight fast enough.

They’re an amazing species to target on fly that I highly recommend for any trout fisherman looking for something a little different.

I’ll let the pictures tell the rest of the story.

Jungle perch though much like rainbow trout in how you fish for them, pull a lot harder pound for pound.

A good Sooty Grunter. These things fight hard and are a great target for fly in their own right.
